Tips on How to Train your Dog

Trainer Tip #1 My cousin Bobby was a Dog Breeder and Trainer. He used to tell me that most people do not understand Dogs. He told me that Dogs are much like babies in the way they respond to stimuli.

Trainers Tip #2: Like children, Dogs have a limited way of communicating. They cannot speak and this makes them heavily dependent on sign language. They show their pleasure by licking your hand and wagging their tail. They show remorse by sulking and anger by growling or biting.

Trainers Tip #3: Since Dogs are like children, they live in a different world that adults. It is a world of total dependence. If you live in a world of total dependence, the only way you can make your way is to please your master or mistress.

Trainers Tip #4: What does this mean? In a few words, it means that Dogs live to please you and the symbol of their success is a Reward and/or a pat or a scratch. When they are rewarded they are happy and more likely to be loving.

Trainers Tip #5: What does not work well is punishment - whether punishment may be a blow, a harsh word or being put out in the cold.

Trainers Tip #6: So, the answer is Reward: Reward, Reward, Reward. Whenever they obey and do what you wish, reward them. Now, of course I am not saying there are no psycho, angry or dangerous dogs. There are humans like that too and the best way is to stay away from them or get rid of them. Dogs are no different. It is Reward, Reward, Reward. Some people may think or it as bribery. It is not. It is simply a non verbal symbol that your dog has done the right thing - what y9u wanted them to do.
